Tried changing my original drawings and adding some texture to them. Might still experiment with these characters but i'm pretty pleased with them at the minute!

Fairy 2

This is the another fairy called Edith.

Fairy 1

One of the 7 fairies from the Brother's Grimm version of Sleeping Beauty. I think she looks like a Charlotte.

Tried to keep the movement and combine it with the textures. Feel like I have really explored different ideas, styles and overlay of different textures. Think I prefer the left one!

More Beauty

Feel like I am possibly getting a bit too tied up around one character so i might move on to some other characters or start thinking about set for a while. I think i am loosing some of the fluid movement i set out to capture, I'm thinking this is because of the tracing paper, but i do think that the new texture i have involved work well, it's just a matter of combining the two. I have added texture to the hair and clothes.

Latest ideas for Beauty (not decided a different name yet). I've used tracing paper to draw this image which I have used for both illustrations. The blonde version is mostly computer edited, as i tried applying texture to the dress (using a colour print i did a while ago) and then coloured the skin, hair etc, in photoshop. I think it is successful to a bit to refined.

I then tried using colouring pencils on the reverse of the tracing paper, highlighting areas and giving it a more drawn, sketchy look, rather than a finished one. They could both be improved but I'm definitely getting somewhere exploring different ways of working.

I stumbled across a book by Oliver Jeffers in today in the biggest Sainsbury's known to man and i've just been on his website checking out his work. His illustrations are probably my favourite of any around at the moment and I think his approach to using different mediums is something I should consider. As well as this, there are some videos online of how he creates his work and he puts up roughs of his works on his website alongside finalised illustrations, which is useful to see the way in which he develops his sketches into his final works.

Some of his children's picture book illustrations:

After my weekly Friday crit, I have gained some useful feedback to improve on the ideas i have had so far. I am going to experiment with adding textures to the images i have already created, as well as new ones. This will hopefully add a bit more depth to the drawings and make them more interesting at the same time. Using different papers is also something i am keen to try out, as someone in my group uses tracing paper regularly and said it would be worth trying it out if I am looking to work in layers. I'm pretty much planning to play around with a few techniques, scan stuff in, photocopy it, cut it out. Mess about but find something worthwhile in the end. Going to get stuck into it tomorrow.

I'm also going to blog and write a lot more, as my hard drive recently died and i lost all my work from this year and like a fool, i didn't back it up. So, i think my blog is a good place to store all my work and findings.

Here is a doodle of my laptop sadness :(

Potential Sleeping Beauty Villian - Mrs. Thorn

Sunday, 18 March 2012

More potential styles and mocks. Need to work on my Photoshop colouring!

Sleeping Beauty

More initial ideas, focusing on Sleeping Beauty. I am trying not to look at Disney's version of the story, as i want it to be my own take and I know if i watch it, I will be influenced by it somehow!

My idea so far is Desperate Housewives inspired, set on a neat, pristine street. There will still be magic involved, so the characters will still cast spells, etc. Here is how i am seeing my characters in my head, when comparing them to the originals:

King and Queen = Owners of the most beautiful garden on the street
Sleeping Beauty = Their daughter, excellent at gardening
Prince Phillip = Gardener, loves Beauty because she has the best garden
Evil Witch = Jealous neighbour, whose garden will never be as good
Good Fairies = Friendly neighbours, looking out for their friends

Initial Ideas

Focusing on Sleeping Beauty at the moment, I wanted to change the story a little so it was slightly light hearted and had a bit of a twist.

Flat Pack Theatre Set

For our latest project we have been given a list of pantomimes, which we have been asked to create a flat pack theatre based around. The final outcome will include a flat pack of illustrations including sets and characters that we are to package in an innovative and accessible way.

I'm already struggling for ideas, been sketching away, but nothing is happening as of yet. It is a 9 week project so i have quite a while to get my act together. Here is some of the initial research i have done to get the ball rolling.

Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge
After watching this a couple of weeks ago, unimpressed with the acting i found the set very elaborate and thought i could link this somehow within the project.

Ed Kluz
His use of bright colours and collage, to create buildings and location imagery, could work really well within a theatrical project, as again this could be elaborate and eye catching

I then came across an animation called Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty, which is a unique twist on the classic tale and incorporates some visually eye catching 2D animation as well as 3D

Daily Diary

For my contextual studies essay, I investigated the impact keeping a daily diary has on my work. I found it very beneficial and will continue to keep one since discovering it really helps my illustrating. Here are a few of my favourite pages from the diary!
